about constipation

all you need to know

Very frequent condition

Constipation is a very common complaint; one in three people experience it at some time.
Here are some of the signs:

  • Difficulty passing stool
  • Hard or lumpy stool
  • When it feels like your bowel movement is not finished, but nothing more comes
  • Fewer than 3 bowel movements per week
  • Often accompanied by bloating and discomfort in the abdomen

Usually, constipation is not a very serious condition, but the symptoms can sometimes be signs of more serious diseases.

So don't hesitate to talk to your doctor.
Especially if the problems last for several weeks or months, you should get medical advice.

What causes constipation?

Many cases of constipation are attributable to poor lifestyle and diet, but there are other possible causes, too:

  • A range of medications can involve constipation as a side effect
  • Pregnancy
  • Restricted mobility due to old age, disability or sickness
  • Psychiatric problems such as depression or posttraumatic stress
  • Or various other medical conditions, including serious diseases.

If any of these things apply to you, you should talk to your doctor.
